Did you know your phone and tablet have little power boxes inside called batteries? Most of them use something called lithium-ion batteries, which are great at holding energy. But there’s a problem — they can get hot and even catch fire if something goes wrong! 😱
Now, scientists at Penn State University have found a cool (literally!) way to make safer and better batteries. These new batteries use something called solid-state electrolytes, or SSEs for short. Let’s find out what that means!
💥 What’s Inside a Battery?
Imagine a sandwich with two pieces of bread — these are like the anode and cathode in a battery. The gooey filling in the middle is the electrolyte, which helps tiny particles called ions move around and create electricity. Most batteries use liquid goo, but that can be dangerous if it leaks or overheats.
Solid-state batteries use solid stuff instead of liquid, which is much safer. But making these solid parts stick together can be tricky.
❄️ Super Cool Trick: Cold Sintering!
Usually, making strong solid battery parts needs super hot ovens — as hot as 1,000°C! That’s almost 20 times hotter than your oven at home! But these high temperatures can damage important ingredients.
So, what did the scientists do? They used something called cold sintering. It’s a way of pressing powders together without using crazy heat. They also used a jelly-like helper called PILG (Poly-Ionic Liquid Gel) that helps the ions move better.
This made the battery parts stronger, safer, and better at doing their job!
