Scientists have made an exciting discovery near the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico — they found two brand-new species of crocodiles that no one knew about before!
One lives on the island of Cozumel, and the other on the coral atoll of Banco Chinchorro, both beautiful spots in the Caribbean Sea. These crocodiles look a lot like the well-known American crocodile, but their DNA tells a different story — they are totally new kinds!

Researchers from Canada and Mexico caught and released the crocodiles gently, collecting tiny blood and scale samples. Then they studied the crocodiles’ DNA and the shape of their skulls. They discovered that these island crocs are very different from the usual American crocodile.
