Barnard’s Star is a cosmic neighbor, only six light-years away. If you could hop on a spaceship that travels at the speed of light, you’d get there in just six years! Scientists have long wondered if planets might be circling around this mysterious red star—and now, they’ve found proof!
These planets are much smaller than Earth—only about 20% to 30% of Earth’s mass—and they race around their star in just a few days. That means their years are way shorter than ours! But there’s one catch: since they are so close to Barnard’s Star, they are likely too hot for life as we know it. 🔥
How Did Scientists Find Them? 🧐
Even the biggest telescopes can’t see tiny planets next to a blazing star. So, scientists had to get creative! Using a powerful space tool called MAROON-X, attached to the Gemini Telescope in Hawaii, they searched for tiny wobbles in Barnard’s Star.

Yep! Planets have gravity, and as they orbit, their pull makes the star move just a little—like a tiny, invisible tug-of-war in space! MAROON-X is so precise that it could detect these movements, helping astronomers figure out how many planets were there.

The University of Chicago team wasn’t alone in this discovery. A different group of scientists in Chile had already detected signs of one planet using a different telescope called ESPRESSO (cool name, right?). When both teams combined their findings, they realized—WOW! There are FOUR planets! 🎉
