Can WiFi See Who You Are Without a Camera?

WiFi is usually something we think about when connecting a phone, computer, or game console to the internet. But researchers at Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have discovered that wireless signals can reveal much more than we might expect.

WiFi radio waves bounce off walls, furniture and people as they travel through a room. Researchers developed a technique called BFId that analyzes special information sent during normal WiFi communication. Using machine learning, the system can turn these radio-wave patterns into information that helps distinguish different people.

In tests involving 197 people, researchers reported almost 100% identification accuracy, even when people walked differently or were viewed from different directions.

The person being recognized does not necessarily need to carry a phone or smartwatch. The researchers say ordinary WiFi equipment can provide the signals needed for the technique.

This could eventually help create new sensing technologies, but it also creates a serious privacy question. A WiFi network that can recognize people could potentially become an invisible tracking system.

The researchers are calling for privacy protections to be built into future WiFi standards.
