🍎 Can a photo really tell you how many calories are in your meal?

Scientists found that some AI food photo apps may underestimate calories by hundreds, reminding us that healthy eating also depends on understanding portion sizes.

Many people use AI-powered apps to take pictures of their food instead of writing everything down. These smart apps recognize foods, estimate portion sizes, and calculate calories using nutrition databases.

But scientists recently tested four popular food-tracking apps using 102 carefully prepared meals. Every ingredient in these meals was measured with incredible precision in a special research kitchen.

The results were surprising! On average, the apps underestimated meals by about 250 to 345 calories. They also missed around 30 grams of fat, meaning people may think they are eating much less than they really are.

Researchers believe AI has an especially hard time estimating foods that contain lots of healthy fats, such as cheese, nuts, butter, and avocado. Low-carb ketogenic meals were even more difficult for the apps to measure correctly.

Scientists say these apps are still useful for learning healthy eating habits, but they work best when people also check portion sizes instead of relying only on a photo.

As AI becomes smarter, future food-tracking apps may become much more accurate and help people make healthier choices.
